The Roots of ‘The Hoot’
From the spires that define our valley home to values that define our purpose…it’s all about providing a place for the creative sorts of Jackson Hole.
That’s why we’re absolutely chuffed to invite the Jackson Hole Hootenanny onto the Pink Garter stage once more. While Dornans takes a momentary breath before the summer plunge, Tumbleweed will be playing host to the Monday night tradition spanning back generations.
Sure…we can’t match the splendor of a night out on the grass as the scent of brisket and beans fill the air…but all the same…a touch of that good old fashioned magic will carry on.
For the old hands…especially those with their portraits across from a certain bear bludgeon, no history is necessary. For those of you just on arrival however, a little bit of education might be in order.
Founded by Billy Briggs and Dick Barker at the Dornans Spur Bar way back in ‘93, The Hoot has remained a place for those with a certain itch. That itch stems from a need to scratch the strings, raise their voices and shake off some worries in a thoroughly acoustic manner. As a harbinger of both the fresh faced as well as those who’ve earned their years and talents, The Hootenanny is always the beginning of something good.
Much the same could be said for this lovely old theatre of ours. When Paula Jeffries and her man broke down on the outskirts of a then much smaller and less affluent cowtown, theater was already a well worn pastime. Jackson in the fifties was a…very different place, one where isolation and the earnest attempts of winter to kill its residents led to many a show put up at the town's club house. When Paula’s man and derelict Buick departed…she remained. Taking an empty garage and converting it into the first Pink Garter Theatre, now home to the fabulous Jackson Hole Playhouse.
In 1971, the building you know rose from the shadow of a pink circus tent…creating a home for locals to ply the boards. From the JH Actors Guild, the Actors Co-Op, Jackson Theater Company and Jackson Community Theater, the Pink Garter Theatre has brought up generations of folks with a song to sing, a story to tell, or some general tom foolery to be had.
So here we are…and I do mean we. Tumbleweed Creative Arts began from a desire, a dream to rekindle a touch of that magic that once welcomed the weekend warriors, the nine-to-five Rembrandts, the neighbors and friends who took the risk of putting it all out there. It came from the crazy notion that everybody has something to say, that connection and performance are beyond a standing ovation or platitudes paid. That creativity belongs to us all…even those as Kristofferson put it…’locked out on the wrong side of the door.’
So come as you are, and join those who’ve brought their talents to bear by Martin or Gibson, by mandolin or banjo. This ain’t a place to pluck and preen but get down to root chords of why we do what we do.
The door is always open to those who knock around here, ideas and dreams fostered, finding ourselves and each other in the dark.
